FAQ:

IMPORTANT!!!
Kingpin only works on OpenGL compatible 3D cards or under 3dfxGl. If you are receiving an error of "Hardware Device not found" than the game is not detecting OpenGL support for your video card.

Cards that have been tested for compatibility and passed are: 3Dfx, Riva TNT, Permedia2, and ATI Fury 128.

If the video card in the system is a D3D card or if the system does not have a 3D accelerator card, Kingpin will not run on that system.

You will want to make sure that the most recent reference & OpenGL drivers for your video chipset has been obtained from your video chipset manufacturer.

Q: I am getting a colored screen (such as grey or brown) imediately after starting the game.
A: The fix for this will vary depending on the chipset on your 3D card.

For non-3Dfx chips (such as the TNT or TNT2)-

  1. Verify its a supported chipset that is listed on the box
  2. Within the games directory you will want to rename the 3dfxgl.dll to 3dfxgl.bak.
  3. Copy OpenGL32.dll from C:\Windows\System directory into Kingpin directory.
  4. If you are utilizing the most current drivers from the cards manufacturer you will want to utilize the reference drivers from the manufacturer of the cards chipset instead. (example- For the Diamond Viper V770 you would want the Riva TNT 2 drivers from www.nvidia.com instead of the drivers available at Diamond's site).
  5. Check to make sure your display is set to 640x480/16bit.
  6. You will want to close all background applications.
    • Press CTRL+ALT+DEL. This will bring up a Close Program box.
    • The only items listed should be Explorer and Systray
    • Highlight any other item listed
    • Click on End Task
    • Continue back with step 1 until Explorer and Systray are the only items listed.

For 3Dfx based chipsets (such as the Voodoo2)-

  1. Check to make sure your display is set to 640x480/16bit.
  3. You will want to download the reference driver for your chipset from www.3dfx.com.
  4. You will want to download the MiniGL driver for your chipset from www.3dfx.com. When you run the installation for the MiniGL opt to create a folder on the desktop. Within the folder you will want to copy the 3dfxgl.dll found within the Quake2 folder into the Kingpins directory on your hard drive.

Q: I am getting an error- 'Please Insert the Kinpin CD' on startup.
A: Windows seems to report a second CD device as a "Removable device" instead of a "CDROM". The copy protection will fail if the Kingpin CD isn't in the first CDROM drive in the system. Putting the Kingpin disk in the first CDROM drive should fix this.

If you have only one cdrom drive and this is occuring you will want to close all background applications.

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL. This will bring up a Close Program box.
  2. The only items listed should be Explorer and Systray
  3. Highlight any other item listed
  4. Click on End Task
  5. Continue back with step 1 until Explorer and Systray are the only items listed.

Q: The game is giving something like- 'MM System 266 Tragic error'.
A: This seems to be directly related to the sound card and it ability to play the audio tracks from the cd. Within the Multimedia applet of the control panel you will also want to make sure that the playback device has the proper selection for your sound card selected.

A good test is to bring up Window's CD Player and attempt to play the CD Audio tracks. If Windows cannot play the audio tracks then the game will give this error.

We have also had a report of this occuring on a TNT2 card with "Sync every frame" turned on. If you have this chipset and are receiving this error, you will want to click on the "Visuals" option within the game and turn it off before attempting to start a game.

Q: I am getting no sound or the sound is extremely distorted.
A: Within the games options there is an option for either " Max Compatibility" or "Max performance". You will want to switch to "Max compatibility".

If the problem persists you will want to check to see if you have a Yamaha sound card. We have had a few reports that the newest drivers from www.yamahayst.com seem to work fine with the game.

Q: Every time I try to load a saved game it crashes with 'Error: FS_READ:0 bytes read'.
A: This seems to occur if the system is low on hard drive space. If you free up space and try saving a new game it should work fine. If the existing save games still give the error than they have now been corrupted and need to be removed or written over.

Q: I have a Voodoo2 based card and the game is extremely bright. Can this be fixed?
A: This appears to occur with the DirectX5 drivers that were released for this card. 3Dfx has a new reference driver release that seems to resolve this trouble.

Q: I have a Savage4 chipset and the game textures are all messed up. Can this be fixed?
A: Although this is not a supported chipset listed on the box, we have been able to get it working properly with the reference drivers for the card at www.s3.com and running glsetup.

Q: I get an error when attempting to exit the Pawn-O-Matic.
A: Within the Options menu you will want to select Reset To Defaults.

Q: I would like to have access to the console. How do I do this?
A: You will want to create a shortcut to the game. Right click on the shortcut to the game and select PROPERTIES. Within the box named "Target:" you should see "C:\Program Files\Kingpin\kingpin.exe"

At the end of this line you will need to add "+set developer 1". It should resemble the following:

    "C:\Program Files\Kingpin\kingpin.exe" +set developer 1

In the game you should now be able to hit the ~ (tilde) key and your console will drop down.

Q: I would like to get the wheel on my mouse working with the game like I do with Quake2. Is this possible?
A: The following lines need to be added to the AUTOEXEC.CFG file within the games directory:

    bind MWHEEL_D "weapnext"
    bind MWHEEL_U "weapprev"

Q: I run an extremely high-end dedicated server but the game seems to be harsh and stuttered.
A: We have had reprts of some NT servers with more than one IP address behaving like this. If the server has more than one IP you will want to start the server with the +IP switch. It should resemble the following:

    kingpin.exe +set dedicated 1 +ip 192.168.x.x

Q: When I try and start a net game on my LAN my Windows machine is automatically dialing the Internet. Can I stop this?
A: Within the Control Panel you will want to double-click on 'Internet'. Make sure within your Internet Properties you select 'connect via LAN' instead of connect via modem.

The game is generally just running slow...

Kingpin adds a ton of new features to the standard FPS and taxes your computer in the process. One of the most important things that you can do to improve performance is to make sure that you re-boot your computer before playing Kingpin, and to make sure that you have no other programs open in the background that might steal cycles away from your computer while running Kingpin.

If Kingpin is running slow on your system, here are some things to try.

  1. Lower Your Screen Resolution
This can be done in the Visuals Menu. For TNT owners, try taking your desktop to 16-bit color for improved performance.
  2. Lower Your Sound Quality
Kingpin uses a lot sounds, and sometimes they will causes glitches in the game while they are being loaded from your hard drive. Using low sound quality will eat up less RAM and decrease load times.
  3. Decrease Pain Skins
Each character in the game has two distinct pain skins for each of their 15 body segments. Try decreasing the number to one or none for improved performance.
  4. Turn Off Props
Non-essential props may be toggled off and on.
  5. Turn Off Fog
Fog may be toggled off an on. No fog will pick up the frame rate dramatically on some systems.
  6. Directional Lighting
Turning off directional lighting will improve performance.
  7. Shadows
Toggling shadows off decreases the character polygon counts by half, improving frame rate. You may also select "auto" shadows mode and the system will turn shadows on only when the frame rate permits.
  8. Blood Time
The amount of time that blood remains on screen. Decrease to improve performance.
  9. Decrease your screen size
You can use the "+" and "-" keys to adjust the size of the game screen.
  10. Using 3dfx mini-gl driver
If your system has a Voodoo family card in conjunction with, try using the 3dfx driver instead of the default OpenGL driver by changing the driver in the Visuals options.
  11. Listed below in no particular order are some video cards that we've had good results with:
    • Voodoo Graphics
    • Voodoo 2
    • Voodoo Banshee
    • Voodoo 3
    • Riva 128
    • Riva TnT
    • Riva TnT2
    • ATI Rage Fury
